Ladies/Gents,
Quick question, I have a steel cattle crush at home with prepainted steel, I assume it was red oxide.
A neighbour was up and he told me one lick of hat will kill the cattle, is that true? if so, what paint is safe to use?
-
Perhaps he thinks that red oxide still contains lead?
I'm fairly sure modern red oxide paints contain iron - and given the use of this paint in almost every farmyard in Britain, I wouldn't think there is a problem.
If you're worried, ask your vet to find out - they should be able to check with a poisons lab.

that's what I thought Sue, he must have thought it was the old style lead paint
thanks for your reply

Looking at what else my cows lick in the boredom of winter housing, i think a drop of paint wont do too much harm.

If you want to check i'm pretty sure you can get cheap test kits in most large diy stores, v unlikley to have lead in though. most lead poisioning outbreaks are from ancient paint or car batteries
