red spots on gooseberry bushes

I've got these red spots on my gooseberry, redcurrant and blackcurrant bushes. when you look more closely it looks a bit like eggs or cysts are within the red stuff.  Some acquaintances say that this is rust and I need to dig up the plants but I can't find anything about rust affecting gooseberries, and it seems a bit drastic.  Has anyone any idea what it is?

hiya i have this too an i put it down to aphids if the 'eggs' are green or black i would be inclined to think they are aphids but the 'eggs' are red or orange they my be rust.
I believe you can just cut off the effected leaves and burn or chuck in to normal household bin
