Apples, pears in pots?
« on: June 06, 2010, 11:22:06 pm »
Can you tell me if it is feasable to grow apples and pears etc in pots? If so, which types and how big should the pots be? I would like to do as much as possible in a natural way so soil preparation is important too.

The reason for the pots is that we may move house in a year or so or we may not........... ??? ??? It's that kind of decision  :) If we do move, I might like to take the trees with us.

Hope you can help...

to be fair i wouldn't bother but then again i can see your reasoning.

i think you would get away with young saplings in large pots, or dwarf forms? (think you get them).
But would not suggest pots as a permanant fixture, they will get pot bound and not be as healthy.

you can get "minature"  apples and pears intended for pots. look on Thompson and Morgan, or Adams apple.
they're 'normal' apples grafted onto a really dwarfing rootstock, so I can't see why they shouldnt work ...... but I've not tried!
