Super-trawler fishing petition
« on: February 18, 2021, 12:54:15 am »
Leaving aside very complex issues/arguments over international fishing rights and quotas, I reckon that the UK Gov should now be carefully considering the means of enforcing protection of "protected areas" within UK waters against uncontrolled fishing.  This would be for the benefit of us all (i.e. all fishing nations with legitimate access to UK waters and surrounding waters now and into the future).

As part of this I've signed an on-line petition to ban super-trawlers from UK waters to help the issue reach parliamentary debate stage (100k signatures threshold - over 50k signatures to date).
The more I research fishing politics, the more I realise the complexities, but I believe the desired debate (any additional debate) would be useful if only to achieve some extra controls on the super-capable "hoovers" of marine life in and around our coastal waters and particularly in any designated "protected areas"

I attach link for anyone else wishing to sign the petition (I trust this is not against TAS rules):
https://petition.parliament.uk/petitions/550730

For anyone wishing to achieve some further understanding of the complexities of negotiated and controlling fishing quotas and actual sustainable harvests (or not), I believe the following article regarding North Atlantic mackerel is an extremely informative read:

No obvious sign of interest (other than several 'reads').  Did anyone follow the links and then also sign the petition ?

Yes I did but there were only about 50000 signatures so it won't get discussion time in parliament

Up to 51k+ at the mo, but I'm now thinking the difference will not be managed by end Mar deadline.
