Vegtable and preserves etc at the festival 2017
« on: July 09, 2017, 09:45:42 am »
Hoping that all growers will consider entry into the produce show as the veg we all grow and the preserves we make is just as important as the stock we keep....in my opinion anyhow..

I agree totally [member=23029]lintmill[/member], and from all the 'likes' there are others with you on that.  Maybe some people just take their veg patch for granted and don't think there's anything special about growing veg in the country, but there really is.  We are all so lucky to have our own land and space to grow, so we should celebrate that

I've been beavering away today with produce.  Early Summer Jam with raspberries, gooseberries and blackcurrants made.  I'm not sure if I can show it though, as I had only 12oz jars and I think they might need to be 1 lb.

I have all the veg chopped and salting overnight, to make piccalilli in the morning.  Again I don't know if that will fit in with show classes  :( .  I had never made piccalilli until last year, but my version was brilliant (I'm not usually so smug, honest  :eyelashes: ) and is now a firm family favourite.  I noticed no-one else helped with the chopping  :stir:  but there's a queue to eat it  :hungry:

I would hope that the actual produce would be judged rather than being penalised on what jars we use?

I have also been making blackcurrant jam this week,  bumper crop this year.

Um .......Scotland  ;D

It's the Smallholders and Growers Show at Lanark started a few years ago by Rosemary and Dan, and turning out to be a great success.  Before that we had absolutely nothing for smallholders here in Scotland.  To date there is a huge emphasis on animals, and the growing part is less prominent, but there's scope to increase the interest in this section.

Lanark is only about an hour north of the border at Carlisle so within the reach of Northern England, if not really Wales, and from Ireland it's a boat ride away  :eyelashes:
