I have three of those green plastic compost bins that sit on the soil - conical shape with a lid at the top. I happened to open up the one presently in use to tip in veg. peelings at dusk and noticed some very large slugs on the inside of the cone, heading upwards (the black sort with orange edges). I disposed of them and returned at the same time for the next two weeks - must have disposed of over 50 of various colours and sizes.

Great greys, longer than the black ones, vaguely stripey grey, devour the small slugs that eat your lettuce, so don't bump them off too.

That's useful to know. FW. I was never sure which were the good and which were the bad (they all come under the ugly IMO)

I have a lovely, but out of focus photo of great greys mating while hanging from the lintel of my front door.

We at last have a resident thrush so I'm hoping for help with my slugs and snails from her family. She wouldn't tackle those giant black ones though. I don't know if they are 'good' or 'bad'.

Yes they do eat other slugs, but they also eat your crops if there are no slugs or fungi left. Top speed in pursuit is 6" per minute!

I appear to be having great success with a two session six weeks apart application of a spray on nematode slug destroyer .( £ 22 for both applications as a one product sale )

I've also given all seven compost bins at each spraying session on each session .. there are no slugs in the compost Daleks any more . However there are many many brandling muck worms which have arrived quite naturally in th bins which is good .
