Goslings! with pics
« on: May 06, 2017, 12:08:02 pm »
Last year we bought our first ever geese - rare breed Shetlands from [member=133553]glenisla geese[/member] , Magnus and Minnie (Minerva).

Last month Minnie started building a nest and laid several eggs (we were never allowed to see how many).  Magnus guarded her dutifully and spent alot of time looking bored; Minnie sat on, gracious and elegant.

Yesterday, Magnus's behaviour changed and suddenly he stayed inside the goose house and wouldn't let us anywhere near, but we did get close enough to hear a cheep.  Later we saw 2 fluffy goslings, yellow and grey, and one pipped egg.  This morning there are 6 goslings, and 2 pipped eggs  .  So exciting  :yippee:

Anyway, some pics attached, hopefully.

Now there are 9.  Life for our terriers is going to be awful from now on.  Being hissed and lunged at by one gander has been bad enough, but a whole posse of them  :o

[member=24953]lord flynn[/member] , do you have eggs yet?

Brilliant    So we can make up unrelated pairs when the time comes?

Ours are growing really fast, out all day grazing and in with chick crumbs (non-med) at night - they hoover those.
Until it rains they have no pond as it's dried right up, and we have no water to spare for the dog bath, so it's just a bucket for adults and a shallow paddling pool for goslings.

Let us know when you get a hatch.  Minnie took 4 weeks to the day.

Fantastic, just adorable. All the best with them! :)

These persons have an appreciation, a sensitivity and an understanding of life that fills them with compassion, gentleness, loving concern.
