some trees haven't liked it

Most of my many fruit trees ahve done really well but both almonds and both mulberry trees i planted struggled for 2 years and slowly died away. Now i donlt know if they just got unlucky with the patches of soil they were put in (as in unknown drains nearby and soem nasties draining from roadways up the hill??) or just bad luck.
I'm thinking about putting another set in in different positions and planting them in big holes filled with bought in compost.  Considering an apricot has grown huge since I put it in  as well as some 20 apples, 6 pears, several cherries and plums etc it is odd - and I can find nothing suggesting special requirements for those trees.
