Our new saddleback boat is very itchy. Advice please
« on: September 24, 2016, 06:29:12 pm »
Hi every one! We bought home our new little family of saddle backs last week. A 6 yr old boar, 6 yr old sow and 6 X 6 week old piglets.
Everyone stayed in our stables for the week till we had their paddock ready. We got the boat out into his new paddock today and had a good look at him closely. He is quite itchy and dry on his skin. No sign of infestation. Just wondering if it could be stress of move/ change of diet etc or if it is likely to be lice etc. What would you recommend for easing his dry itchy skin? Thanks

Rub some pig oil into his skin, veggie or baby oil will do if you don't have pig oil. Wait 24 hours and give him a wash and brush with a stiff scrubbing brush - head and shoulders shampoo works great
Continue to give him an oily massage once a week for a few weeks and he should improve.

Having said all that, if he's not been wormed lately (and an injectable is the best sure fire way to do it) you might be fighting a losing battle. If you're not sure of his worm status, either do a fecal egg count and treat or (and what I'd do) jab them all just to be on the safe side.

Thanks HappyHippy!
I'll try tomorrow with the baby oil and get them all wormed at the weekend.
