Flea/tick control for goats please
« on: May 25, 2016, 06:08:27 am »
Hi,  please can anyone help me with advice on what flea/tick treatment they use on their pygmy goats?   I have 5 in total, one is only 8 weeks old, and have not yet treated them.   I haven't seen anything but would like to treat as a preventative.
Thank you,  Karen  :goat: :goat:

No experience of pygmies or of fleas on goats or using as a preventative.
For the angoras crovect, spot on that type of thing get used for lice treatment preferably after shearing to really work well.
I've just used frontline spray on some of them to try to get on top of the problem but I'm not expecting it to be totally effective till I shear in August.
Discuss with the vet is your best option.

This year I've used a spot on treatment, trouble is its an expensive bottle and you only need about 5ml, so after treating 8 animals i have loads left with a limited shelf life.
But definatly less scratching going on.

Only treat when they actually have lice - otherwsie you put chemicals on their skin (or inject them) if they don't need it.

What used to be called Cooper's Spot-on will work at the same dose rate as sheep. Repeat after three weks to catch any that hatched since initial Treatment.

Touch wood -I haven't had any this last winter/spring, but plenty of heel mange (from the straw)....

Thank you all for your helpful advice,  I haven't noticed any scratching or anything on them so will keep an eye out.  They all seem happy and content so I must be getting something right lol  :)

Can this be used i dairy goats? Somewhat confusingly there is a zero hours milk withdrawal in cattle but should not be used in sheep producing milk for human consumption!

I doubt that in dairy  goats you would be allowed zero milk withdrawal  as nothing is registered for use on goats !!! Sorry but check with your vet before using anything on your goats if you are drinking or selling the milk . :huff:

I was told the standard is 7 days for anything not meant for goats ( from a vet whose parents had a big dairy goat herd and knows goats)
