Jacob fleece lanolin content?
« on: May 03, 2016, 01:14:37 pm »
do Jacob sheep have a lot of lanolin in their fleece? I bought some carded Jacob blended with 10% mohair at a recent wool festival. It felt a little greasy whilst spinning, but now I have come to wash the yarn it almost feels more greasy than when I started! I have washed it in two changes of very hot water with lots of soap, which is they way I would wash raw fleece, and it still feels really quite greasy and the yarn is not blooming as I would expect. Shall I just keep washing or does anyone have any other suggestions?

I've never known any fleece to be that greasy.

After a further rinse in hot water I hung the yarn out to dry. It feels much better now dry, so I am not sure why it felt so odd when wet. I am planning to dye the yarn, so will see what happens then.

It'll be interesting to see how it turns out.

It's a while since we kept Jacob sheep, but their fleece wasn't greasy, much less so than Hebs.

Thanks for the information. As I said, I a, not sure why it felt so odd when wet, I wil see how it turns out when I dye it, I am hoping to,include it in a woven runner to go on our bed.
