AI'D the buffalo today!

4 Buffalo AI'd today, the ones I imported last year, as they failed to get in calf. Here's hoping they get in calf :excited: :-\

To bring this thread back to something helpful then, what do the acronyms stand for, and what does the process involve?  I'm guessing it's nothing to do with the Australia-Indonesia Partnership for Decentralisation?

A.I. = Artificial insemination, passing semen into the uterus via a long straw passed through the cervix.
P.D. = Pregnancy diagnosis, where an arm is passed into the rectum and the uterus and ovaries felt for swelling and structures consistent with pregnancy, +/- ultrasound scanned for same.

I mean't AI'd not PD'd don't know where that came from, guess i'm worrying that they may not get in calf. :'(

The success rate last time was 3 out of 5, just hoping at least 3 out of 4 get in calf (if not all 4). :) PD is booked for 4 weeks time, so we should be able to tell by then.

 Just wondered as a matter of interest - if you have 61 water buffaloes and a conception rate of only 60% from AI, why you don't keep a bull?

We did but he died a couple of weeks ago :'( This is the reason for running the AI programme on the ones he didn't get in calf. We have 2 young bulls which won't be ready until the end of next year, they where born to AI from 2 top Italian bulls, so hopefully their calves (when they start working) will be top quality :)
