My small holding is not registered in my name, the registration still in the previous owners name. Is it best to transfer the ownership using the existing registration number, or to make a fresh application.
Once I am registered as a small holding, what advantages will it bring, if any.

I'm assuming you mean holding number? Legally you cannot keep any livestock without your own holding number

Bill I think you are referring to the CPH number. If you contact RPA they will put the holding in your name if the previous person no longer has any relationship to the holding. I assume this will lead to less confusion when registering stock movements or applying for subsidy but RPA would be the best ones to discuss it with. If you feel that the holding number needs to remain with the person currently registered to it then a temporary number may be assigned.

I was told that I couldn't take over the old CPH number on this holding and needed to apply for a new one. It wasn't a problem and I got it fairly quickly.

Must be different in England / Wales, here in Scotland the CPH number goes with the land (Country Parish Holding - how can it not?). The seller is suppose to notify RPID but there's a form on line to fill in to notify them.

I"m pretty certain you'll get new herd / flock numbers though since they belong to the keeper not the land.

The County/Parish/Holding number goes with the land, not the owner.

some confusion here ..... as I understand it ...... CPH number is attached to land but a new land owner needs their own number (certainly here in Wales) if land is rented then land owners CPH number is used or a personal temporary one can be got by livestock owner.

I think it's probably best to speak to your local Welsh Government office as certainly doesn't seem consistant in the way CPH numbers are allocated: we are also in Wales and we were given the number that the previous owners had used. Once you have your CPH number you will be able to move stock on and off your premises and apply for your own flock/herd number.
