Preparation for selling onwards/Abattoir
« on: November 29, 2015, 12:35:32 pm »
I've had a quick google but can't find what I'm looking for.
Am I right in thinking if we are sending cattle to the abattoir (or even market) they need to be as clean as possible? Do we give them only dry feed like hay the day before?
Have some very muddy cows that this may be on the cards for but will need to work out a game plan if they need to be clean
Have one limping too but suspect that is temporary due to being so soggy - does she need to be sound to go?

Is NI but would this differ much in Ireland?

Best to just phone your abattoir and market for advice ,   cattle we send to our abattoir are all belly clipped and dry .     The general rule on limping livestock is that they must put weight on the foot and not carry it .

Thank you :) she is weight bearing just not totally sound.
Will find local abattoir and market and ask.. Hope they don't want belly clipped as these are unhandlable.. One of the reasons to go

Some abattoirs charge for belly clipping if they have to do it.

Do they do this before or after? Cause I honestly don't think you could do it before

With the right crate and pens any cattle can be done , some big slaughter houses clip them once dead , most markets will offer the service .

The system here isn't safe enough. . TB testing is wild enough by all accounts. If it can be done at Market then I'm happy :)
