Do you get a new flock number if you move holdings/house? I didn't think you did but just tried to order some and been told otherwise.

Yes, tells which county/ parish / holding you live in = CPH

I have a new cph, got that a while ago. But i wasnt aware our flock number would also change. Bit of an unwanted surprise.

Sorry need to think about what I'm reading ! Your flock number is specific to your holding ,no idea and can't find an answer as to the information in the 6 digits

Yes. Flock number is specific to holding. In terms of traceability it is far more important to know where an animal came from geographically, than who was looking after it

So just to complicate things does that mean as we have two blocks of land with different CPH's we should have two flock numbers?

If the keeper remains the same the flock number belongs to the main farm. We have permanent grazing on a neighbour's smallholding with its own CPH but the flock number is that of the main farm.

I have three different flock numbers and 5 different CPH numbers, just to mix things up a bit

According to https://www.gov.uk/guidance/sheep-and-goat-keepers-register-your-holding-and-flock-or-herd it's linked to the main CPH no.

"APHA will give you a unique flock or herd mark, which is a 6 digit number used to identify your flock or herd that is linked to your main CPH. "

(APHA was the AHVLA I assume)

According to http://www.smallholder.co.uk/news/927599.registering_a_holding/ it's per type of livestock and potentially more if you want:

"You will require different numbers for each type of livestock you wish to keep. You are also able to request separate numbers to identify different flocks.

Cattle Herd numbers and Sheep Flock numbers follow the pattern of a Country identifier followed by a unique 6 digit number, eg: UK 171688.

It is possible to be issued with the same number for cattle and sheep if you choose to keep both types of stock."
