I will also be looking into cheaper vaccines for the meat lambs.

Our vet said that in our system on our land, we could Ovivac the lambs for their first course, switching the keeping females onto Heptavac at the next booster.  So yes, it's worth looking into.

Interesting , but since you have to give 2 doses of the product to get full protection and hep p contains protection of 4 more diseases , how would that work ?  QUOTE  from  MSD animal health the manufacturer " animals that were started on ovivac p + and are kept for breeding should receive the full two dose course of hep p + "

So you dose them the next year twice with the heptavac?

Oh, I see what you mean.  Yes, we do.  They get Hepx2 pre-lambing.

My fault - I phrased it very badly.  Sorry!

So Sally, if I've understood this properly, your routine must be something like:

3 weeks old - First Ovivac
8 weeks old - Second Ovivac

Then for ewes retained for breeding:

1 Year old - Ovivac booster
Nearly 2 years (6 weeks pre lambing) - First Heptavac
Nearly 2 years (2 weeks pre lambing) - Second Heptavac
Nearly 3 years (before having second lamb) - Heptavac booster

I can see this wouldn't be economical with the small number we have, but it's certainly interesting - thanks for sharing

I'd love to try a Charmoise, Me - but our world is a tough world for livestock and I can't think we'd want to tup any ewe lamb.  We'd sooner give them the extra growing time and have them live and produce longer.  We don't sell drafts.
