Ouch
« on: May 24, 2015, 06:46:41 pm »
We must have some pretty nasty bees at the moment as I am finding it difficult to go into the garden without being pestered.
Yesterday one got me, just above the eyebrow. It was painful but I put on some bite relief cream and it didn't feel too bad. I work this morning to a very swollen eye lid and the lid 'welded' shut.  It get me an insight into what it would be like to loose the sight in one eye, as has just happened to a friend of mine.
I am very glad that the lid has now decided to open, albeit partially but enough so that I can see again.
Phew. will be more careful next time

Have you found out why they have turned? Queenless maybe

OH has been investigating and one hive doesn't seem to be developing brood so you might be right about them being queenless.

Yeah that's why ours turned. At least it's a good time of year to re-queen  :fc:

It could also be that they have been feeding on a big Crop such as rape and it is coming to an end. They can get very nasty for a while afterwards

Well thats one thing we don't have to worry about, no big crops here, in fact no crops at all

You still have flowers in the locality ( 3 mile radius ) that run to high pollen production or nectar flows in warm still humid weather . The cooler spell could be the result of the end of a flow or the pollen production of a local to you plant species as well or you may have been in the bee line to a flow .

But if no brood, queen less sounds like a good bet. ;)

Quite possibly a maiden queen not started laying yet, they may have superseded or the old girl has upped sticks and moved with part of the hive. Until the new one starts laying they may just be restless.
