Flies on Pigs
« on: May 21, 2015, 02:18:02 pm »
Hi all,

Ive just been down to the local farm supplies place and they said they don't have anything for repelling flies from pigs. I was wandering if there was anything I could put on them that wouldn't cause them any problems as they are being bothered quite a lot by the flies already, and I know that due to the mild winter we are expecting a mass epidemic this coming summer, which will only cause them more bother.

All help is appreciated.

Thanks,

SL

Not had this problem with my pigs but have used citronella oil on calves before now.  Not sure what pigs, having such a super sense of smell, would make of it.  Do they have shade or a breezy spot to lie in?

a good wallow gives them the mud protection that normally keeps the flies away

Mud. They will sort it out themselves. Always worked for us. A wallow cant be two wet as the whole point is they cover themselves in mud and it's not washed off. The flies stay well away.
Hope it helps
