Shetland cattle breed societies

There are three - which may lead to some confusion.

The first is the Shetland Cattle Herd Book Society www.schbs.co.uk Based on Shetland, this is the registration body for pure Shetland cattle and produces the annual Herd Book. Membership is £20 per year (2015); this entitles you to reduced registration fees, newsletters and a copy of the Herd Book.

The second is Shetland Cattle from Shetland Breeders; this is a breed support group for Island breeders.

The third and probably the most important to UK mainland breeders on a day-to-day basis is the Shetland Cattle Breeders Association (SCBA) www.shetlandcattle.org.uk. SCBA is a support group for mainland breeders and has been around since 1980. Annual membership is £11 (single) £16 (couple) if paid by Direct Debit and there is no joining fee. The Association produces three very good newsletters every year, maintains the website including stock for sale, and a breeders' directory (including the pedigrees of all cattle so you can check genetic compatibility between cows and bulls at the click of a button). The Association also has members with great experience of Shetland cattle and Shetland cattle genetics, which is vitally important in a breed with a small gene pool.

I would urge anyone with Shetland cattle to join SCBA and contribute to its work.

This year (2015) the AGM is in Scotland - at Kate Sankey's West Mossside, at Thornhill, Stirling on 24th and 25th October. It would be great to have a good turnout of Scottish breeders to welcome those who make the journey from other parts of the UK.

Oh, and there's also a Shetland cattle Facebook page called Shetland Cattle  :)
