What log splitter?
« on: April 17, 2015, 08:14:43 pm »
I have been using a 3 ton log splitter which I got second hand and had to repair to get it working.  It seems to have died again and so I think it is time to get a new one to start on the 4 tons of birch that is sitting outside the woodshed.

Whilst the 3 ton splitter did most of what I wanted I think a more powerful one would be better so its not at its limit most of the time.

Can anyone recommend one that won't break the bank and will take a 50cm log?

We hire a 10tonne one from a hire shop  It costs about £40 for the weekend and deals with massive logs easily. For us its a better option than buying our own.

What's your definition of "break the bank"?  :innocent:

I had thought about hiring one but like to do just an hour of firewood here and there.  I think that over the years I will probably get my money's worth out of buying one.

I guess I will have to spend about £300 to get something worthwhile. Much more than that and it would have to be something pretty special.

I bought the Forest Master FM10 off Amazon last year and have been really pleased with it - a fantastic machine and solidly built!

I'll be honest ,for £300 all you will be buying is gonna breakdown within a few years .a half decent splitter will set you back £700 to £1000 .have a look on the arbtalk forum !
