Weights on cattle
« on: February 05, 2010, 08:00:20 pm »
I just got the phone call back from the butcher telling me the meat was ready for pick up. It is 450# dressed out. They didn't weigh it before killing so don't know what the live weight was. Does anyone know what is normal weight loss after slaughter? It just seems like we would be getting back a WHOLE lot more meat than this.

Hi, as a rule of thumb the killing out percentage in cattle is approximately 53% (give or take depending on condition, etc)...for pigs its around 75% (same applies)

Hope this helps
