Pigs and streams
« on: February 28, 2015, 10:49:41 am »
Hello xxx
We would like to move our pigs but one field has access to a burn (stream) running through it.
It runs from our field and then under the road.
If it's been raining it can be up to the top of our wellies in the deepest bit, but most areas are shallower.
Would we need to fence the burn off or would the pigs be ok?
Thank you
Joanne xxxxx

I'd be inclined to fence.  Pigs are so good at thinking of ways to get into trouble.

They are also very good swimmers so could end up miles away. :roflanim: :roflanim:

Maybe you could fence across a section of the stream? It would be lovely for them in the hot days of summer.

Our porkers once escaped when we were getting them in for market, we have a stream, porkers went up stream and ended up heading towards the neighbours garden  :innocent:. Managed to stop them but by the time we got them all out of the stream and inside we could have killed the lot!! I'd fence  ;D

Sorry, only just picked up your replies.
Both ends of our field are fenced off over the stream. I wonder if a grid under the water to block it off ( but let the water through) would block it and stop them swimming under?
It's too expensive to fence along either side.
They definitely wouldn't drown though?
Or is that a really really stupid question?

I'm sure they wouldn't drown! You would have to keep the fence clear of flotsam etc. though.
