Light Sussex eggs
« on: May 07, 2008, 03:06:28 pm »
I have 5 Light Sussex hens that have just started laying. The eggs are extremely small. Is it normal that they start small and then get bigger? The eggs I bought for hatching (also Light Sussex) were considerably larger than the ones my hens are laying.

Yes they should get bigger - I asume that they are not a bantam variety. Last year my light sussex laid huge eggs. They were not as big this year but seem to be getting bigger now.  :)

Our Black Rocks are just coming into lay for the first time - the eggs are weeny about 1.5 inches long; our Light Sussex, who are in their second or third year lay "normal sized eggs" and our rather elderly RIR lay humungous "ooh yah" eggs (but not very often).

I think this pattern is perfectly normal - the pullet eggs will get bigger over the season and next season, when they come back into lay again, the eggs will be "normal" sized.
