Ewe scanner for small numbers?
« on: November 25, 2014, 05:54:25 pm »
Hi there :)

I have been let down by a scanner, he said the set up costs would be too high and then said he would get back to me and then vanished off the face of the earth  ???

I am struggling to find any scanners in or close to my area or even just willing to travel, I am just South of Reading

Unfortunately its a very small number, it would be 107 but 20 ewes are only going to be tupped from next week and the rest start lambing from mid March through to April

so I assume the 20 would be too early so its only 87 ewes to scan

If this is the wrong place to put this then I will delete it, just wondered if anyone had any contacts they could share with me

It shouldn't make any difference if your willing to pay the setup  cost.

I paid £40 for 8 goats, that was the minimum charge.  He needed persuading that goats were same process as sheep, complained that the angoras were hairy in the wrong places ;D
and the dairy goats in milk had udders in the way ;D
but was spot in with the scanning.

I do my own with a little Draminski scanner and as I don't do very many (100, 150 a year) I am not as accurate as someone who does millions. BUT for my own purposes its fine, I know who is empty for the young sheepdog to terrorise (I mean train with)/cull and the minimum number a ewe is carrying eg. "pregnant, at least two in there"

Unless your vet does more than I do don't expect them to be as accurate as a scanner who does a lot.

87 sounds a lot compared to my 12! What we do is get ours scanned with a neighbour when he gets his done, and pay the going rate directly to him. Maybe you could ask neighbouring farmers if you could do the same (though may be difficult to manage with 87 ewes), or ask which scanner they use?

Thankyou  I have managed to sort someone now, he is also willing to do the early 20 so will do all 107 of them, the early ones he can just say if they are wet or dry but thats better than nothing :)
