Thanks for that very useful info.

I agree that even the large animal part of my current vets seemed a little on the back foot about goats so going to have a chat with another practice which advertises that they have expertise in goats and see if they seem better (my current vets have always been very helpful so feel a bit disloyal!). I know that for the most part I can get the info I need here (as already demonstrated! ) but would like to find a good vet now rather than trying at 3 in the morning in the middle of a crisis!

Thanks for the book recommendation too.

wow! John Matthews Book £45-£55  :o

I;m sure its a lovely book but it sure has a lovely price tag! That was on Amazon though, so maybe cheaper elsewhere?
I use Storey's guide to raising dairy goats as a starting point for most things then google from there
keeper of goats, sheep, pigs, ducks, chickens, turkeys, dogs, cats, goldfish and children, just don't ask me which is the most work!

It is an academic textbook, so not discounted by Amazon. It is written for vets and vet students - so if your current vet is keen to learn more about goats that would be a great starting point for him/her. HOWEVER - I would not be without mine I have to say. (But I am scientist by training, so the text is ok for me)

Slightly less academic (but still quite good) is Peter Dunn "The goatkeeper's veterinary handbook". Probably cheaper too.

Storey's is ok for goats, but really a bit on the American side for terms (as in doe, buck etc etc) and also in measurement terms (but their homemade electrolyte solution has saved at least one of my goats).
