I haven't got a holding number as so far we only have horses. After doing a fair bit of drainage we now have more usable land than the horses can graze so are thinking of getting some sheep.  A friend has some we can borrow for a few months to see how we get on.  My question is do we need a holding number if we do not own the sheep and what are the benefits of registering or not registering?

its the rented grazing issue


if its scotland the sheep are registered to the holding regardless of who physically owns them, in england its slightly different as the owner can get a holding number on the landlords land effectively...


i spent forever working this out when i got mine as in effect in scotland any sheep on rented grazing belong (in the eyes of the government) to the landlord...


it made my head hurt then as well, think i may need a lie down now...


ps for scotland i have now had this confirmed from multiple sources...

It doesn't cost anything or take any time to get a holding number so why not get one just to be on the safe side. It's there then if you decide to get your own livestock.

You cannot keep sheep on your land legally without a holding number.


The system is designed to be able to trace and record movements, not just who owns the sheep. The owner won't be able to move them onto your land legally since they won't be able to complete the necessary movement records, which include the destination holding number.


If your holding is close to the owner's it can be treated as a logical extension of their holding (albeit with a different holding number) which makes things easier from a standstill point of view.
