Anyone had a deaf pig before?
« on: September 01, 2014, 03:38:15 pm »
Of our litter of 4, one has 2 bright blue eyes and doesn't seem to hear us calling. He stays asleep in the arc when the others come bounding out and I have to go rub him to wake him up. He is eating well but seems a bit different to the others. I think he is deaf. Anyone else had a deaf pig before?! I cant see this being a problem  - as they are for eating not breeding from. He does love his tummy rubs...bless!

British lop - hairy pink! Same as the others. Only difference is his eyes are ice-blue.

Hmm, could there be a genetic problem?  Our pigs respond to both the sound and smell of feed appearing - you can see their noses start to twitch even if they're fast asleep and snoring.  Certainly wouldn't breed from him.

Dunno whether there is any relation but white cats have a reputation for being bad mothers as they are deaf so maybe there is a link between albinoism and deafness.

do deaf pigs still squeal the same way when hungry - or is that a mimicry behaviour?

Anyone had a deaf pig before?   My EX WIFE often said she had one  ,but after a while it was just judicious selective hearing.  :roflanim:
