Wanted: Dorkings - near Tiverton, Devon
« on: August 16, 2014, 09:28:16 pm »
I am looking to build up a flock of Dorkings - I don't mind which colour I go for, I just want to be able to work my way towards having a breeding pen of them to help preserve the breed and give myself an attractive, dual-purpose bird at the same time. I would be happy to buy hatching eggs, chicks or adult stock, but am not able to travel too far from Tiverton, Devon. About 45 mins in any direction max.
Thanks.

Dorkings are just lovely (and very tasty!). We breed Silver Grey Dorkings but in North Yorkshire so way to far for you.
From the Dorking Club, I have a list of breeders. There is a Lady in Tiverton on the list who breeds silver grey dorkings:

Not the world's greatest layers, in my experience.  Lay daily in Spring and early Summer but tail off towards Autumn.  Very docile so don't mix well with an assertive breed like the Welsummer or RIR.  Too late in the year for good fertility in eggs but we'll have some Silver Grey next April if you're interested.  We do a test hatch for fertility before selling hatching eggs.

You could try South Yeo Farm - http://www.southyeofarm.co.uk/poultry/our_breeds.html - they have Silver Grey Dorkings and are near Okehampton (Devon geography a bit ropey but guessing that might be within 45mins?). I've got two Dorkings hatched from their hatching eggs a month ago.
