huntaways?......pros & cons
« on: July 27, 2014, 12:10:38 pm »
we have been on the look out for a working dog for a while. I would have preferred a puppy but OH has found a collie x huntaway (3 yr old male) looking for a new home. Apparently trained for sheep, good with other dogs etc so will go see him next week.
Collies I know plenty about but not huntaways......any advice/tips/warnings? I have heard they are LOUD!

Nice shaped dogs. . . . . noisy as feck. The barking would do my head in, but it's meant to move mobs of sheep in big rough country where often they are not seen, but start to head home when they hear the dog screaming like a nutter coming across the hills.

I'd be interested to see the cross work. And how trained is trained lol?

well apparently good for fairly close work but not a hill dog, which would suit us as our sheep are kept close by. His owner has sheep and 3 other dogs so this one is surplus now but we are going to see him and see how he works next week hopefully.
After having a bad experience with rehoming a supposedly working collie last year I'm very wary but the barking could be interesting as my neighbours who live along the road all have yappy little dogs (bichon frisses & beagles) and my old dalmatian only barks if he sees tourists  :innocent:
