Nuno felting course
« on: July 21, 2014, 04:07:47 pm »
I went on a Nuno felting course yesterday and well each made a scarf. I really enjoyed the day and will definitely make something else. I have already ordered some used saree silk from India for my next project.
Yesterday I used a silk scarf and felted one side of it.

Funnily enough, I was reading about Nuno felting today. Your scarf is lovely. I quite fancy having a go myself now.

Lovely and bright Sally.  You can get such delicate felt with nuno, but since my 'trial day' I haven't done any more, as I feel my coarser fleece might not work so well (and I don't use imported merino)

Don't forget the pics of the next thing you make - you're so industrious  :)

I haven't taken a pic but made a felt stone yesterday. It sounds a bit strange but it makes a lovely paperweight and only takes 15 mins.
It is so quick and only takes a very small amount you could try it with your fleece and see what happens.
You need a nice shaped stone, the sort of thing you get on a beach. I wetted the stone a bit to make the first layer of fleece stick. Add fleece all over, including some colour if you want. I used blue for the base and put some pink stipes on top. Use soapy liquid and just sit rubbing your hands all over the stone. Its quite theraputic. You can either leave it as it is once finished or put some upa glue on it and then cover in varnish if you want a sealed finish and voila......(did I spell that correctly?)

I really fancy making a felt hat, maybe one of the type the peasants wore in Medieval times.........

statute hats or caps , were worn , by law , or as the name implies 'statute' , by peasants , to provide work for the poor who made them .

Thanks for the inspiration!
One day I will get around to try felting with my Soay fleeces... the 'felt stone' is such a brilliant idea to get started with!

Seriously it was that easy. Just be gentle to start with though because until the fibre gets a grip on itself it all falls off. thats why I wetted my stone so at least there was a bit of cling. One thing to remember, if you want to add emblishments i.e. stripes as I did or other bits of colour you need to put them on at the start because once it is felted it wouldn't felt more on top, unless you are happy to glue bits on.
