Joining the Shetland Club
« on: July 02, 2014, 08:06:12 am »
At the weekend we moved things up a gear at the croft and have now become cattle keepers.
Very exciting, if a little nervous for someone who has never kept cows before.

  welcome to the club
Linda

Don't wrestle with pigs, they will love it and you will just get all muddy.

Let go of who you are and become who you are meant to be.

We got 2 cows.  An 11 year old and her daughter who is 5 (and who has a calf).  All are pure Shetlands.
Hopefully both should be in calf as they have been running with a Shetland bull before we got them.
They came from a dairy herd and so should be quite milky - we will probably milk them next year.
Both are very docile - As soon as we got them home they had no problem with us walking up to them and putting on a halter even though the previous owner had not halter trained them.

Aye, it is a small world.  They came from Jacqui Broadhead (although we have never met, Paddy (from the breed society) organised it all).  It seems that most of her herd came north.
We have Greenoak Dryope and Broadacres Drew.  I have not yet had a chance to spend time on the breed society website and go through their family tree

I heard that Jacqui had dispersed her herd - bit sad really (not for you obviously  :) ). The breed society had its AGM near Jacqui's a few years ago and we visited her place. She was milking and cheese making - it was really hard work as she was on her own, but it seemed to be a really good wee business and she seemed to be a really nice lassie.
