We had our alpacas shorn about three weeks ago, discovered one of our female alpacas was expecting ... So we have been checking on her at least four times a day and this evening, there we are. One little cria. Have checked him, no bleeding from cord, seems to be healthy. Put him in a coat for warmth. Mum seems okay, nothing visibly wrong. Not sure what happened to the placenta though ...
They are together, can see the other alpacas but they are in their own area so they get a chance to bond. Cria seems to be feeding okay,and we plan to get up at first light to check.
Anyway, is there anything that you think we have missed? We haven't weighed him as we aren't experts, will get the vet out early next week to check them both but any  advice gratefully received.

i would spray the cord with iodine if you can. check its weeing and pooping okay, and that should show you its feeding ok.

Will spray the cord tomorrow (Don't want to stress Mummy out anymore), but it is dry and not weeping.

Sounds like all is well.  You are right about not stressing the mum out - she will appreciate being left to fuss over her baby.  Spraying with iodine is about all I would do - if this is possible without causing an upset.

My friend has alpaca and she is away on holiday at the moment so I am going to feed them every day. They are keen to get their breakfast but not keen enough for me to touch them

Do you know if the mother and cria have been vaccinated against clostridial disease !  If the mother has not been vaccinated in her last 4 weeks of pregnancy then there has been no passive transfer to the cria against infection.  Therefore the cria will need an injection ASAP and again in 2 weeks time, only after the second injection will the cria be fully protected. I always vaccinate my females in the last four weeks of pregnancy. The vaccination needed is Lambivac or Heptivac or similar.  This is an important issue, hope this helps.

His name is Shakespeare! We are naming the herd after authors and my son (7) wanted this name for a boy and Bronte for a girl! I swear, it was his idea, I kinda like it as with the herd name the cria is Dolcoppice Shakespeare!
