I am in the process of buying some land it has some stables and an old tin barn on it. Do I need to have it insured in any way?

Yes liability insurance as a minimum
If someone comes on your land and an incident occurs, or your land catches fire and it moves onto a neighbours
You can insure the buildings in case of fire if you like
