Funny how words change their meaning from place to place...rather like the different sheep words.  Endless confusion on a nationwide/worldwide forum   ;D    I don't think we have a word here for that sort of mini-stack, Sally.

I meant to say, you can tell which are the dampest bales by lifting them.  There is some variation in density and length, depending on how ancient your square baler is, but heavy bales will in general be wetter than light ones.   Another way to tell if your bales are heating up is to insert a metal rod inside the bale and leave it for a minute, then feel the tip for temp (a broken tedder tine is ideal).  You can use the same method to tell if your compost heap is getting hot inside.

Phew Just got 100 bales in,  feel a bit damp, but hopefully we will get away with it.... THanks for all advice I think the stooking saved the day!!! ;D

Just got the 2 big fields to think about now - VERy dense grass on those so we either need a solid heatwave or we will sell as standing crop to big bale farmers.  But either way, our sheep will eat this winter hooray! Thanks again :bouquet:
