Tag requirements before slaughter
« on: June 07, 2012, 04:44:06 pm »
Hi,

This is a really basic question but slightly confused.

I have three weaners being delivered tomorrow.  They have the breeders herd number tattoo'd on one of their ears.

Before I send them to slaughter do I need to tag them with a metal tag with my herd number or is the breeders original tattoo enough?.

Many thanks
Steph

Assuming you are in england or wales....

A single metal tag in one ear or tattood on each shoulder by way of slapmark.

Thanks

Steph,
I would contact the abattoir where you intend to take them as I understand they differ in their requirements. The one I phoned said they would be happy with either metal ear tags or slapmarking.
I opted for the slapmarking and have bought a kit from SfS

ask the abbitior     mine said metal or plastic and they slap mark them when you turn up so saved me buying a slapper

Whichever you use it will need to have your herd mark on it.

Many thanks for all your replies.

Must admit, I prefer the idea of tagging rather than slap marking (just know i would mess it up and end up covering the pig with numous half legible tattoo's.  :o .

Will call the abbatoir tomorrow.  Thanks  xx
