Bloated 1-day old lamb - any ideas?
« on: March 30, 2012, 04:48:52 pm »
This is the first time I've had this problem, but I had a lamb born last night who has gone horribly bloated today and is wheezing. It has fed off mum but not had bottles. Has anyone had this problem and do you have any solutions? I've got a few ideas of things to try but there's nothing like experience. Thanks.

He's wheezing because of the pressure on his lungs and heart.

Abomasal bloat is caused by Clostridia and other bacteria -often from the soil.

From what I can find out you need to try to treat the bloat - possibly stomach tube, though apparently difficult, and then the bacteria - antibiotics.

Sadly, it can be both hard to treat and fatal.

Hope you're successful  :-*

Your answer much appreciated. Unfortunately you were right - 10 minutes after my post the lamb died. At least I've an idea what caused it now so thanks.
