Transport - Certificate of Competence
« on: November 23, 2011, 05:11:41 pm »
Do many folks round these parts have a Certificate of Competence for transporting pigs over 40 miles? Getting to some of the shows or to a slaughterhouse in some of the more remote areas of the country must exceed the 40 mile limit. Or is it one of these miraculous things that all journeys never exceed 39 miles?

If anyone does have a qualification, call you tell me more. Where did you get it. Was it difficult to achieve the standard to qualify. How much did it cost?

Who is entitled to request an inspection of the certificate? Does this happen very often?

Regards,
Dave

Don't worry about it - really easy, commonsense test. It's multiple choice and the test can either be taken at a local college for about £40 or £50 - can't quite remember how much. Or in your own home for £10 more. Contact the NPTC for providers or  get in touch with your local agri college, if you have one.

Take a look at the link at the bottom of this post. If you read through all the info, it will help you with the test. You need to do a separate one for each species you want to transport, but they are all basically the same - the thing to remember when answering each of the questions is that health, welfare, and safety of the livestock is the key to it all.

There was one stupid question like, "You're delivering pigs, and one falls sick. Do you a) ring the police, b) ring the nearest vet, or c) ring the destination and tell them you're going to be late".

The test is frankly pointless, more tick boxing - my neighbour's 10 year old was able to answer the Q's when I gave them to her, and she is not intereted in animals!

So yes easy to get with a few minutes preparation.

like a lot of things in life it is a con or a money making venture for some
i/we subscribed to this one because it was FREE  we don't transport for a living ( hire and reward )
we think we take the best care possible when transporting
8 hours is about the max you could safely drive for anyway ( some will debate that they can drive longer) with safety in mind
maybe i am just old  maybe i am a true rebel with age on my side
now what money making scheme can i lumber on the masses that everybody and his dog would need
muh that is a difficult one  :farmer:

Look out folks it will be the vet test next. we will all have to pass a test to allow us to inject and worm our animals. Been doing it for years on our own and we will have to sit in a classroom and have some condescending numbty tell us what to do and how to do it safely, and charge us for the privilege of listening to them!.
:o I must be getting old and grumpy too :o :farmer:

You still need your Certificate of Competency. You have to carry both with you whenever transporting.

So what is a transport licence?

Took my certificate exam earlier this year at Brinsbury College, fairly straightforward, now able to move all species over 65km and under 8 hours just waiting for my new trailer to arrive.

Is it just a straightforward multiple choice test or is there a separate trailer test too (she says quaking at the thought). If the former, I'll do it, if the latter, all my journeys (from the middle of the back of beyond  :D) will be 39 miles or less  ;)

You're ok, jaykay, it's a theory test.  BH is going to take it as soon as we get a slot to go to KO to take it so we can tell you what it's like after that.

As Liz says, you still need both the Certificate of Competency (after passing the multiple choice test) and the Transport License (which they no longer issue unless you already have your Certificate of Competency.)

But you do not have to have these if the animals you are transporting are not for your business.

I wrote all this up a while back, here 'tis:

Don't listen to the money men - they know the price of everything and the value of nothing

Live in a cohousing community with small farm for our own use.  Dairy cows (rearing their own calves for beef), pigs, sheep for meat and fleece, ducks and hens for eggs, veg and fruit growing

Jaykay, is it reversing the trailer you're worried about? I had the same problem until I came up with the best solution. I take my niece with me, I do the driving, she does the reversing ;D
