Feeding Ice Cream to Pigs !
« on: November 12, 2011, 02:37:46 pm »
Has anyone seen the picture printed in Issue 5 (arrived yesterday) of Practical Pigs, printed in partnership with the British Pig Assoc.

They have on page 20 a picture of two pigs being fed an ice cream and cone!!!!!

It is good to see that they are promoting good husbandry for our pigs (NOT).

Does anyone else have any views on this.

Have not seen this but cannot be good for the pigs and makes life confusing on what is OK to feed or not.

I di comment to OH that it was a bit off  :-\
Although it was a nice photo that brought a smile to my face I did think it was a bit irresponsible of the BPA to print it (but maybe the editor/publisher isn't familiar with feeding rules & regs  ???)

Yes, we had spotted that - and since it is a cone, presumably comes from an ice cream van, which is a catering establishment.

If bought from Tesco, the ice-cream would presumably have also been in a domestic freezer, so again would be classed as part of a domestic food area.

As it happens we know the editors, so will let them know for future.

I do find it surprising the stuff that is often printed in articles in magazines and occasionally also the photos. Not being unreasonably outraged or anything but magazines and publications about these subjects should try to make sure there is a basic understanding of the rules on animal feeding. It is basic rules and has been for some years now that (unless its chickens with layers pellets), livestock should only be fed stuff that doesnt have meat products in it and hasnt come from a kitchen situation or one where contamination by other foods is possible.

While the rules arent of course 100% followed by a lot of people, at least if they had reliable communication of what the rules are they wouldnt be breaking them unknowingly, which I think they would easily do if they relied on the mags. If I see another article advocating a nice diet of scraps from the kitchen for chickens/pigs.....:-O

Not to excuse it, but...

The chain of writing, design and publishing for magazines like this can be pretty stretched out, and it may be that someone in the department (or the company) responsible for actually putting the layout of words and pictures together was told to find some nice stock photography showing someone feeding a pig.

They came across this, thought it was cute, and hey presto tight deadlines and loose quality control means it makes it to print.

Pure speculation but I've seen it happen so many times, on the web and in print.

I discussed with the editor last night.  They will be printing an apology in next issue.

As Dan says a magazine is not a one man effort, but any pictures of pigs (or indeed chickens) eating should be thoroughly check to ensure that no-one can get the wrong idea.

All I can say is - what a waste of a good ice cream!  My grandfather was an ice cream manufacturer and I was brought up on good quality stuff so am addicted to it now.  MMM - think I'll have some now - yum yum. ;D

It just goes to show the ignorance of the editorial team behind this magazine. The publishers are used to producing lifestyle titles, not specialist livestock publications. Shocking mistake to make, and very misleading for beginners. Thanks for pointing this out - I must admit I only flicked through because I find this magazine so superficial I can't bear to read it cover to cover.
