In similar vein, all but two freezers are guaranteed to work only when the ambient temperature is 10 deg C or above. In one case (Whirlpool), using the freezer when the ambient falls below 10 deg C invalidates the warranty completely.
(Guess which brand I did
not buy.)
One company (Miele) took the trouble to explain that the heat exchanger needs a temperature gradient to work, and that is why they may not work in low temps - and/or may keep trying to work and failing, thus being very inefficient and possibly icing up inside. But their freezer (a) will not be damaged by being ON in low temps, (b) will
always warn you if the internal temp rises to a point which is unsafe for the contents and (c) even if you do have to turn the freezer off when it's very cold to stop it using up an entire power station's output on its impossible mission, the warranty is not invalidated when the ambient returns to 10 deg C.
(Guess which brand I
did buy.)
As to whether the freezer works ok if we get sub zero for months again this winter - I'll let you know next year... (If we get -18 deg C and below again it won't matter, the food will keep fine on the shelves!)
Sorry, not quite daft labelling, but it seemed bizarre to me that (nearly) all freezers are not guaranteed to work when it is too cold.
