Morning. Sick piglet no better or worse this morning. Have moved him to isolation pen. Given glucose with syringe. Temperature normal. Still not eating. Having read other posts it seems a shot of antibiotic could help. Can I do this myself rather than call vet? Am quite happy to inject but do I need vet to prescribe medication?

Yes, you'll either need to buy it from them or get them to sign a prescription for it. I've never found any anti-biotics that aren't prescription only.

In UK all injectable antibiotics are prescription only. Your vet will probably let you have enough to treat the one animal rather than a whole bottle which is likely to go out of date before it is all used, if you only have a few animals. Also not all antibiotics are the same and your vet will be able to advise the most suitable for the particular condition, or even whether some other treatment is indicated. Most vets don't charge for advice over the phone.

On occasion when one of our pigs has gone of its food I have used marmite on the back of the tongue (best done with a large spoon) that has encouraged eating.  If this doesnt work would think vet time.
