Similar to ouessant but a bit bigger  my friend says "C'est un peu plus gros que les ouessant et un peu moins sauvage, mais tout autant rustique! "

Whatever was the 'Roughage revolution' of 1945 to 1970?
Hebbies without horns?
Would it be too difficult to import them if there are none here?

It’s probably snatching something from mum; enough to make it not want a bottle, not enough to thrive. I had one last year the same, took it away and put in the pet pen, it went on fine once it realised powdered milk was the only option.

If the ewe is well in herself and not oozing anything from the affected quarter you could put her back with the rest, but I’d put her back with 1 lamb and lift the lamb that’s struggling. And cull the ewe after weaning.

Sheep / Re: Help! Advice on bottle feeding lambs with ewe with mastitis.
« Last post by JFW67 on April 14, 2024, 08:59:13 am »
I’m pretty close to giving up on trying to feed the lamb.  It’s now 11 days old and we have not managed to get her to take more than 20 or 30 mls herself.   She will feed but takes very little and is quickly keen to get away.  I’m using a Pritchard teat and have tried it with three different sized holes and a small slice lengthways down the teat.

I have resorted to tube feeding her 60mls the last few days in the evening so that she is getting something.  Last night catching her to tube feed was not that easy - she’s not at deaths door but is always a little hunched with tail down. (Photo attached). She spends a lot of time resting but is up and active and keen to feed of mum.

She is gaining weight very slowly, and now at 3.4kg is half the size of her twin.  They are still in a separate pen to keep the ewe from the rest of the flock because she had mastitis, treated 8 days ago.

So I’m wondering:
Should I persevere with trying to feed the lamb - I keep them more to manage field grass than to earn so a small sheep is not an issue.
Should I now allow the trio back in with the main flock

Advice?

Sorry, I've not heard of them.  Any chance of a pic?

This may be too late but we had quads this year. We left all 4 on her for the first 2 days then 2 were given top up bottles. She rejected them initially but once we held her and they had fed a few times she accepted the smell of her milk plus the bottles. They now follow her, sneak occasional feeds but have a full bottle as well.  I hope that means they get to live a natural life as lambs with a mother but effectively she feeds 2 and a bit babies. If it fails then I will know it’s a bad plan but a month in and it’s working so far!

Thanks Chris

From what I have read, by the end of the year, imported livestock will require an inspection on arrival in uk, which, apparently, is not required now (?)

On top of the blood tests and other inspections

I'm curious why it will get worse by the end of the year @Bywaters? Is something happening there that I haven't heard about?

I think the key issue is 'imported', because it's the exporter that fills in the paperwork, so you would need to ask someone here if they can do it. I think there are English speaking facebook groups that might know, but I can't point you in the right direction unfortunately. Perhaps try a Google search?
