Title: What's everyone up to today?
Post by: plumseverywhere on July 24, 2012, 08:41:29 am
I'm taking my 4 daughters fishing in Oxford (!) then having a BBQ with my dad.  I mentioned to him that one of my lambs has been struck by blowflies and he said "oh that's handy because we'll need meat and maggots Tuesday......" <groan>

So how are you all enjoying the school holidays/sunshine (if you have it!) or are you stuck working (boooo!)

I've got Bloomer coming down for a couple of days  ;)
Mostly, today will be spent trying not to slice the top off my finger (unlike yesterday  ::)) and get organised with smallholder festival stuff.

Birthday today. My son has given me 2 tortoises, (have wanted tortoises for years), so excited about them, so no doubt will spend most of the day watching them.

I've spent the morning tackling a bit of jungle garden that isn't productive so rarely gets looked at let alone weeded ::) but I've one nearly recovered chook free ranging to get strength back before going in with the rest, so I felt the urge to help her hunt worms ;) tho she's since gone off to lie in the sun and left me working so when I got light headed I gave up and came indoors for a while..

It is at the stage that it is clear I've started but equally clear there's a long way to go before I finish even that bed, so I' m not sure if that's a good thing or not, maybe selective blindness would have been a better tactic ::)

It's too hot for me here in Norfolk, so the gardening can wait - I'm just keeping an eye on one of our sows that is due to farrow & hoping she can have them at night, away from the flies...

We've just collected some bales of hay from the field next door who are rapidly cutting, drying and baling before Monday's turn in weather.
Lopped some tree's, removed some altogether and cut back bushes - horrid job but garden looks great now.
And India (my 7 yr old) and I just pulled our first carrots, some potatoes, beans, peas, onions and garlic ready for dinner!
Just necking a lucozade in celebration before going back out there to clear away more logs, leaves and mess!

Looks like you got lots of sun after all plums!  8)  I've just spent the day at the Border Union Show watching Anke and Ballingall with their goats.  Rain managed to stay off - just - and then it poured about 4pm just in time to clear the place for going home time.  Kids are still waiting for their 'summer holiday' here though  :-\

Today I am trying to be energetic and unpack everything from yesterday's show, and re-organise myself for next week's show. Also trying to do housework and tidy up the garden as we have family coming to visit at the end of the. Failing miserably on all counts as I am really lacking energy and enthusiasm for it all!

My friends have gone on holiday and have given me the chance to play at being farmer... So, this morning saw me strutting through wet fields, sheep crook in hand (more to help me over rough and/or boggy bits, of which I find a new one every time I go out, rather than catching sheep!). As most farmers, I do also have a job to go to, so soon I'll be off for work...

I have been black Hammeriteing gutter brackets and old iron T hinges for the new foldyard door.  Now I just have to get it off my fingers and nails.  Just about to sit down with a cuppa and watch the rest of the olympic crosscountry. Daughter has been giving me running commentary - so many falls/slips/eliminations and lost shoes!  Love the imagination gone in to the fences especially the chess set and the crescent cradling the backdrop of the city.

Gutted the house yesterday, vaccuumed etc. Today cans of Acclaim arriving to spray the little bleeders as they sleep and Frontline combo from the vet to kill off Snowball's little 'friends'. Sick to death of the crawly, bitey things - especially when they jump on guests (!)

OH had some lumps removed from his head under LA on Thursday so he's got a sore head.
So this weekend is going to be fairly subdued I think

Been trying to decide (with hubby) whether to take on a kitten advertised by our local animal charity, who was found starving and with a poorly foot. He is now well fed and his foot is fine, just waiting for new parents. We've decided that we would love to have him, so Ive emailed the lady at the charity and Im just waiting for her to reply. He looks a lovely little man, tabby with loads of white, actually more white than tabby. He will be neutered for free by the charity when the time comes which I think is so generous. If all goes well, we are going to call him Henry (Henri)!

Taking it easy this morning due to an unforeseen and totally unexpected medical problem plus a mild case of vertigo which started a couple of days ago but got worse over night. I cant look down now without the world spinning!
This afternoon should be fun though as I have to help hubby get the latest delivery of wood away before this week's tomorrow morning.
Ive also got to start getting things organised for our new arrival tomorrow :cat: :excited: :excited: :excited:

Dodging showers to do the usual rounds - and knitting during them  :)

Was supposed to take my mower into the garage to be fixed, but a friend arrived this morning so couldn't and not now doing a 12 mile round trip on a quad bike in this weather.

Hope it's drier tomorrow morning and they can fix it fast, as I should be able to mow Wed - Sat this week.......

I have been varnishing my kitchen settle.  Good thinking time.  Was thinking and wondering how Mallows had got on with the evacuation of her girls, whether Bella was home safe and sound yet, how Plums' daughter was today, how was Mad Goat Lady coping with her pain etc.  I'm such a worrier, though I am thankful it is none of my family (inc animals) I have to worry about at the moment.  Lucky me.   :)

Your username should be "Lovely lady", for thinking so much of others. I have to admit though, that I get so moved when I read some of the problems that folks are having to deal with. It just goes to show what a "family" we all are........and believe you me, I think I know more about you lot than I do about most members of my family!!

Nah! Lovely lady sounds far too precocious and I would hate to appear to be so.  I do however consider myself so very lucky so I'll stick with that I think but thank you both for being so kind.

Just top coat varnished kitchen settle, can't wait to get it in the kitchen and then make the cushion pad (no doubt the cats will use it more than we do :cat: ;D ).  Going to pick up my mum to come and stay for a few days.  She sounded a little low on the phone yesterday so I think a change of scenery will do her good.  She is hard work to entertain though so wish me luck.

I'm doing pretty much nothing today, but we're going to attempt to round up all the Large Black weaners this evening and get them into the shed for weaning & socialising (code for giving them belly rubs  ;))
Should be fun, or entertaining for anyone watching  ;D 21 piglets and 2 people  :o wonder how long it's going to take (and how many times I'll end up face down in the mud  ::))  :fc:

Finally got hold of a Traveller at a reasonable price, dying to see if I like it. :excited:  Only thing is, if I do like it, will I have to keep three for myself...? ...the Traveller for travelling, the raw fleece wheel, the everything except raw fleece wheel... Have you tried spinning on two wheels at one time yet ? That would easily let you justify doubling capacity  :innocent:

OH had to go to the hospital for his half yearly check up this morning. We saw yet another doctor..it seems that as soon as they have him for a patient, they get up and leave. She was lovely, not French, and she spoke perfect english. Im quite happy to translate for hubby if the doc doesnt speak any english as its a bit much to expect them to, but this doctor was more than happy to oblige. She has changed OH's medication, stopped some things given him new drugs (the latest one out for his condition) and wants to see him again in 3 months. She just seemed to be so genuinely caring and said that if I was ever worried, I only had to pick up the phone and speak to her. I thought that was so nice. I just hope she stays a bit longer than the others, one of which has given up medicine altogether. Mind you, she was as mad as a bag of frogs, great doctor though..shame!!

Well, the new doctor sounds good Mary

I've been dashing about in the rain and spinning. What I should have been doing indoors was analysing exam statistics and replacing the Sellotape on my work suit hems with stitching (blush).

Anyway, will attempt to use this yarn as singles so have been fulling it. It's a bit curly still - I think energised is the technical term  :D It's hanging over the bath with a weight in it at the moment.

Hey, Helen VF, next time you're in Kirkby Stephen give me a shout and I'll put the kettle on - I'm only 7 miles down the road

Very little as usual.  Getting very fed up with it.  I want to get a rise recliner chair so that I can sit up and at least I could knit or write.  Can't sit in an ordinary chair for very long as I get uncomfortable so I try sitting on the sofa with my legs up and gradually slide down so I'm practically lying down.

Researching the Tithe history of our village.  Fascinating.  Ulterior motive - one of farm buildings used to be an old tithe cottage and need to prove to planning office that it was historically a dwelling.  We want to try to convert back to dwelling for my mum but it had been used as farm storage by previous owner for so long.

I think there's a rule about 30 years - if it hasn't been a habitation in the past 30 years maybe you'd need change of use planning permission? I say so because there's a house in our dale which is getting close to that and everyone keeps saying 'if R doesn't do something about that house soon, people won't be allowed to live in it again'.

Hopefully the barn you're looking at is inside that time frame?

Is there someone old in the village who would know? It is fascinating finding out how things used to be, what was done where  :) Good luck

Thanks Jaykay - looking at the building I believe it will have been way more than 30 years.  National Archives website is very interesting though and I'm quite enjoying researching regardless of whether it will be useful to us.  I now know the name of the chap who lived in it in 1845!!  There are a few old photographs around but none taken close enough to identify it as inhabited.  I think I will draw the conclusion that any evidence will not be of much use within the planning application but I'm starting a file just for pure interest.  Have found out that this little hamlet was quite self sufficient in its time.  When renovating the farmhouse I found a newspaper reporting, amongst other things, the civil war pushed inside the split kitchen beam.  I read and photocopied the parts I could and pushed it back in with a local one from 2010.  Maybe someone else will discover both in the next century.  I love history and hope that I can leave something of significant interest for my descendants.

I thought my day was quite busy until I read all or yours especially you Plums!!
Our workman came this morning to finish off the plasterboarding of the bathroom, so I was tea and coffee maid, plus runner for anything they wanted upstairs. During that time, I made a load of pastry so that I could make our handyman a Bakewell tart to take home. At the same time, I made a raspberry and apple pie anda cheese and ham quiche. Then this afternoon, I made a large batch of spicy fruited buns, some to go to our workman for a gift, the rest for the freezer. Then I was upstairs in our new bedroom clearing a space for a new wardrobe to go into. This evening, I will be starting to tidy the conservatory which has been out of action since before Christmas as it has been a dumping ground for plasterboard, paint, plaster etc. I cant wait to get it back into operation as its a lovely room and its where our main dining table is situated, and Ive got guests coming next week!

Oh - to have my kitchen back..... I'm SOOOO jealous of your wonderful sounding baking Normandy Mary. Instead I found myself washing stuff to cure the bacon with under the waterbutt tap this afternoon  :( :(

I'm here on my own today. OH off working in spain for a day or two, so I can do what I want. Don't seem to have stopped today - just going along doing the next thing that needs to be done without OH either tutting or saying that this or that needs to be done.... BLISS!!!

Started of with usual round of pigs, chickens, dog and polytunnel, rounded up recycling and rubbish, cut the rest of the spare 2x1 for my aviary panel project, cleaned out cockerels, took laundry into town, dropped off recycling, bought a load of eyelet screws for the panel project, lunch at my favourite cafe, bought more wood for the panel project, got home and put dry cure on the last of our bacon. I thought it was a belly but I was pleasantly surprised to discover it's a back. Checked sheep and brassicas. Another round of pigs and chickens.

And on and on.......

Mike you may want those rusty old sheets some day, I'd keep them.  We gave a lot to the scrap man in our last place and really regretted it a year or so later.  Handy for ad hoc livestock pens, laying over muddy access routes etc.

And yes, I'd better get off the computer - was just taking a tea break - have to go out and continue the deconstruction of the super thick stone walls of our kiln house so it can be rebuilt - its like an archaeological dig out there, must put some photos on...

I have to say I don't really want to get rid of all of them. The problem I face is that the barn is by the house and where I'd have to store the sheets is about 400m away, up a hill of about 50m, and with no vehicular access. I think what I'll do is sort through them and keep the best, some of them are more akin to corrugated rust than actual metal.

last day of summer hols fofr my daughter, so its ironing, sorting out pencilcases, polishing shoes etcetc for me today. great. ::)

Just hang on in there......sanity beckons tomorrow.  My lad went back on Monday and I have been so silly happy.  Just being able to DO stuff without having to feel guilty about not playing with him. The relief :)  Have celebrated with a pack of crappy dairy lea slices.  Can't be bothered to go shopping.  Just want to do what I want to do.  I even enjoyed creosoting the chicken coops this morning.

I had a phone call this afternoon from my neighbour to say did I know my goats were in the garden eating my apples.  For someone who is struggling to move I was off the sofa fairly quickly (usually need help), shouting for OH.

The horrible creatures had demolished the stock fencing, pushed over some hurdles and got through the fence.  Goodbye bean plants, half my cherry tree, a good chuck of pear tree and plum tree and some of the apple tree.  Most of the plums had been eaten and a lot of apples (too big to get in their mouths although teeth marks suggest they tried it) were on the ground.

I grabbed a bucket and some dairy nuts and rushed outside (ok hobbled outside).  this attracted their attention and they gobble the lot while I got a lead on one and tried to hold the other one but I have no strength in my hands any more and they pulled away.  I managed to tie the hurdles over the gap while OH grabbed the baby and shoved her back in the yard.  Amazingly he managed to corner the other two and get them onto the patio where they couldn't do any damage.

At this they meekly strolled into their yard while I inspected the damage.  I think I'm glad that not much grew this year as there was less to wreck.  At least they hadn't got to the strawberry bed or found the blueberries although the bed with the squash plants has been well churned up.  by the time I got back into the house, they were lying in the sun discussing their impromptu feast.

Recovering after a weekend of constant talking and cooking for our guests. They left around 10am this morning, I was back in bed at 11.30 for 2.5 hours as I was feeling so tired. So apart from the animals, Im doing no work today and its salad for tea.
I dearly love my brother, but my sister in law is quite hard work. She talks CONSTANTLY from the minute she opens her eyes in the morning, till the moment she closes them again to go to sleep. She's a bit treble clef too, so she tends to shout. After a couple of days, it gets to be a bit much. Oh and I both think we've gone deaf ourselves now!!!
Still, they brought my Tesco order now so now all my cupboards and freezers are full to bursting!

Aware the weather is coming so I got up early doors this morning and went out on the pony for a ride. Got back just as the first hint of wind and rain started. Went out to post a parcel, mucked out, poo picked, walked the dogs and did the goosie and chicken water and chicken feed. Brought the horses in early as the big chap is very funny about atmospheric pressure changes and prefers to be tucked up in his poo palace before it gets really bad. I gave him a really thorough groom as being older he is changing his coat big time already whereas my 9yo mare hasnt even considered it yet.
So three hours earlier than normal I am back indoors with horses in, dogs fed and just the nighttime ritual of dogs and horses to do at bedtime. Quite nice really, fire to light, homemade broccoli quiche and chips for dinner and cosy up with the dogs.

It brightened up this afternoon.  Even had a bit of  :sunshine: .  I went with OH into the greenhouse to pick any ripe tomatoes.  Took the secateurs because they are very overgrown and spent a happy twenty minutes cutting back any unnecessary foliage.  It meant losing a few green tomatoes but will let any sun there might be get to the ripening ones.  Got one bed done before I started aching.  Hopefully do the other side tomorrow.

It's amazing how good I felt afterwards.  It's been so long since I've done anything resembling gardening.  Wish I'd gone down this morning because I had a very bad start to the day, feeling depressed and as if there was nothing worth looking forward to.

Hd a bit of 'one of those days' today. Been suffering from a cold (man flu really) that has left me knackered so the morning animal round started late and left me running behind all day. Grabbed a quick nap after lunch but was woken up by one of our farm members coming to collect the weekly veg box for their village.

Quick dash round in the rain to pick runner beans, tomatos, carrots and pears before weighing out some spuds and onions to go with them. Then I decided to try out the new rotavator - a little 'lion cub' for handling the raised beds and intra-row weeding in the field. Nice little runner and turne over one of our beds in about ten minutes.

I stopped the engine and it fell over trying to manouever out of the bed so I grabbed at it and managed to grip the exhaust. Whoops! On to milking the goats with my left hand whilst the right hand held on to an ice pack. Just got a batch of goats cheese on and feeling ready for bed already. Perhaps tomorrow will be better (and drier?)

Went Christmas shopping today.  This is not me being ultra-organised because I'm not.  My friend is going to Ghana next month to visit mutual friends and offered to take presents out for the three children, the middle one being my goddaughter.  Had a lovely time in Waterstones choosing books for them all. Famous Five for the 8 year old, a sticker book and a book called 'I don't want to go to bed' (very apt) for the 3 years old and the Gruffalo and The Hungry Caterpillar for the baby.

Good choices Mad, my kids loved all those books - my kids are 9 and 11 and still enjoying bedtime Famous Five stories, they just love them.  We have a pygmy goat called Gruffalo because that is exactly what she looks like.

Nice to read your posts again Plums  - we're on our penultimate bar of soap

I am going to a gift shop near by to take samples and discuss terms - they are interested in stocking locally handmade soap and I got my card in first  ;)  Unfortunately I feel really rubbish with a cold but hey ho!
Update please Plums. How did it go?

Ah bless you Mary, thank you! Yes - she was very happy with the samples and we start stocking as of next week! I was nervous so talking 10 to the dozen  ::)
Large opening of a local farm shop for us on Saturday (my sidekick Milli will be helping me) and then time to knuckle down and make some cinnamon/orange soaps and Xmas pudding bath bombs  ;)

Today I was mainly making cider.
Bit of a saga as we have no apples ( first time here in 21 years apparently) but we found some by accident about 15 km from us. We collected too many and gave up at 4:00 pm - 25 litres of juice in the bucket. Lovely!

Forgot to mention, I have already read the younger children's books and plan to read the Famous Fives before they go to Ghana.  Use to love those when I was younger.

  well done plums.

How did it go ditw?

Well, my exciting day evolved around taking the tiles off the bathroom Walls to discover they were keeping the place up  :o
Rang dad for a jack to keep toilet cistern up on wall he asked if I wanted it brought over, 'yes! Unless you want me to remove my knee from holding the darned thing up! '

That was shortly after the wall fan fell off after a tile was removed, bringing off plaster and exposing brick, and leaving live wires exposed  :innocent:

Aching now, half a room done. Bring on tomorrow...the shower zone. Had better have a plumber on standby  :roflanim:

Are you sure you ought to take any more tiles off?  If you have paper on your ceiling, whatever you do, don't try taking that down.   ;D
Title: Re: What's everyone up to today?
Post by: Mammyshaz on September 27, 2012, 09:25:42 pm
The ceiling is fine, we renewed it many years ago after the polystyrene tiles were removed exposing a disaster  ::) slowly but surely we will have built a whole new house I'm sure.

We are now very accustomed to wallpaper bringing off the plaster, and woodwormed stairs collapsing as we pulled to see how well attached they were for renewing ( just thanked our lucky stars they were attached to concrete floor so it was unaffected  :relief: )
A rotting cupboard brought part of the ceiling down too when we dismantled it

Father in law is a plasterer thank goodness  :D and oh gas engineer who also has electrical cert. So pretty much covered.  ;D

At least by the time you have finished you'll know you have a sturdy house.

In my first house, my ex was putting up polystyrene tiles in the dining room, stopped to make a cuppa then heard a crash.  Half the ceiling was lying on the floor.  An investigation showed that it had been repaired at some time with cement.  Pushing the tiles on had obviously loosened it but it could have come down at any time and would have been nasty if anyone had been underneath.  You never know quite what you are buying until you move in.

Oh mummyshaz your renovations sound same as we've had here!! Several rooms with those lovely polystyrene ceiling tiles that are such a huge fire risk that you panic and rip them down soon as you move in only to find chunks of ceiling follow them!
we also found a hammer touching a live wire embedded in the kitchen chimney stack when we raised the lintle to get a range fitted. Daft thing was there was chestnut hair in the brickwork too, loads of it, which I didn't know was commonly used years back in building and I assumed it was a murder weapon. Luckily the plumber caught me ringing the police in tears and panicking and told me  ::)   I stick to making soap nowadays.

:roflanim: oh plums, you do make my days  :sunshine: with your life stories.

Our cement also contained horsehair, it was used many years ago along with the limed plaster. Father in law used lime many years ago, and said it was great to help prevent damp damage. ( don't quite understand how, mind  )

No dead bodies found here either, when we pulled down walls and ceilings   :relief:  :roflanim:

Have to say the little rotavator is now my best friend. After having burned myself on the exhaust on Wednesday, today me and our workshare, Trevor, managed to get six beds rotavated, composted, re-rotavated and finally covered in black plastic in about two hours! Looking like we might be ready for spring when it comes.

 well done plums.

How did it go ditw?

thanks, yup all good. offers from 2 banks, just going thro the small print.

horse hair was used as a binding agent. and it is still used today.
lime is breathable, so it is brilliant on damp walls much better than cement for cob and stone walling.

Spent the morning at a massive livestock and general market that is held only on the 29th of each month ( In France). As we searched the many rows of poultry we heard someone shout frantically  "Stop it Stop it"  .
Amongst the many many cages of birds was a scottish woman  trying to stop a chicken pecking another. The reaction of desbelief amongst the French was great !
We bought 3 grey laying chickens described as " Limousin".
Spent the afternoon repairing a hole in the barn with large blocks of stone and ended it with a neighbour who turned up with a quarter of venison for us. The hunting season has started!

So funny Plums.  We found chestnut horsehair in our old plaster after scraping off about ten layers of paper!  Whilst doing prep for rewiring the farmhouse we found a plastic drinking straw used as insulation around bare wires.  Eeek! - main switch off straight away.  Found all sorts of 'interesting' DIY repairs when we started, including wiring on the outside of the house wall to link sockets on the inside.  Its all rewired now though and signed off so we are safe.  :relief:

I am sitting here with a cup of coffee wondering which job to do first. Fields are so wet and muddy with all this rain, outside work takes twice as long,as Iget the barrow stuck in the mud.  Need to clean some goat pens out,and the hens ........they have all trod mud inside, and seems pointless cleaning it, as they will do it again ......!!!
Got lots of fencing to do at the new land, but need some help for that one!!  Oh, and poo picking, as the ponies all got in the small paddock, and left lots of piles of course.  But its blowing a gale, and about to rain, so not ideal for pushinga barrow round a bleak hillside.

Didn't get my bonfire :( Oh arranged to have trailer delivered so over saw that, then noticed one of next doors jersey cows upended, so rang them, turned out she's an old lass in calf and had managed to get herself rolled into a dip in the ground and couldn't get back up, she's ok thankfully after a big heave to help her up, then dragged about 3 ton of dead pumpkin plants to compost heap, then made a corned beef and tattie pie, walked dog, fed pigs, brought washing in. OH came home and has now gone to bed to read and i'm watching man u out the corner of my eye, shocker of a first goal they let in but now all equal thanks to the flying dutchman, think i'll turn in myself shortly.....good job lifes not dull isn't it :-J

That sounds fun, Mak.  I slept until 10.15am because I hadn't told OH what time I wanted calling.  My friend who does the morning milking has a trapped nerve in her back so I have to do it.  By the time OH had got me into and out of the shower and helped me dress I was practically due for the next lot of painkillers so milking was very uncomfortable and being hauled off the milking stool even worse.  Still I did manage to clear up dog poo as well before the rain started.  Strained the milk and left OH to bottle it and clean food buckets while I had my porridge for lunch.   ;D

I have now told him that if I am doing the morning milking, I need to get up a lot earlier than 10.15.

Painting the inside of our shepherd's hut on stilts (the house is on stilts not me) - it's raised up on telegraph poles and is quite big - mini-kitchen one end and wood burning stove the other - it's going to be my painting studio/gallery and general hideaway, but only when we get everything else a bit further on.  It overlooks the mill pond with all our duck, hen and goose activity going on, so it's nice to paint away and peek out at their capering goings on.
Weather report says its going to be dry for the next few days.   :fc: :fc: :fc: :fc: :fc: :fc: :fc: :fc: :fc: :fc: :fc:

I have tried to grow salads and radishes over winter - but the ba**ard voles eat all....Theye ok over the summer, but in the winter they just move in... and they don't use the traps either...
Picked a good amount of raspberries again today, and from the polytunnel last of tomatoes are awaiting their turn on being cooked up and frozen, last cucumbers and green (I never get red) peppers picked too - yes that's the end of the polytunnel season here too...
Also made two cheeses (now in press) and planned tomorrows (oh so interesting...not) day out to test-drive some vans, my car was just written off... :-[

What size of van are you looking at getting Anke? I have to say they are so useful, even the small ones.... You can get the small ones (ford connect/ berlingo size) with a fold down seat in the back. But the big ones are great- if I had was getting another one now I'd definitely get a higher roof though.... Even as short as I am I bang my head on ours!

Drove it through a flood on the road, drowned the engine and it was 10 years old... but I had to do the "damsel - with two children - in distress routine for the first time in my life  - no mobile reception, so I just flagged down the first 4 x 4 that came down after me... :eyelashes:
Beth - I am (probably ) getting a Transit - long wheel base and high roof one - it will sleep three, take some (female!)  goats and all my clobber for shows too.... and I can stand up in it!

I hosted a Soap making day! Katie and Goatlady from here came over along with quite a few other goat keepers. Very nervewracking but I actually enjoyed it  ;)

Apart from my little TV appearance last year, I've not done a demo before so quite enjoyed the challenge. Now looking forward to hearing about their soap making over the next few weeks - hoping I've dispelled some myths about how scary working with lye is!

What was I up to today?
One of the tasks was to fit a plastic tap onto a plastic water butt that is taking water from a downpipe. Simples?
No - the area around the water butt floods after rain and the cellar ( 6 meters away) gets damp. However the water supply raises it's head in the cellar then it flows underground to the barn and so passes under the water butt ( one of them) that collects rain water from the barn roof. Well it should do unless we have a freeze.
The simple plastic tap connection turned into a massive exploration of underground working and lifting a drain man hole cover across the road. 2 HOURS WORK !!!!
Smallholders should never have plans or lists of jobs.

The sun's been shining here for several days now... What's going on - this can't be Scotland in 2012? :innocent:

Anyway - done the washing, got out the rest of my broad beans - and now I fell wacked, because for the second time in a month I've got a massive cold, which is leaving me knackered after the slightest bit of effort. Grrrrr. Good excuse to get back to the knitting and reading, but I'd rather be doing something outside in this weather!

(And how come they've managed to get to the moon, and now even Mars, and not found a cure for the common cold yet? I've tried all the known remedies... ??? )

Sorting out for the 6 teddy bears (aka Ryelands  :D) lodging in my goat paddocks, and cleaning out poultry in a tshirt  :o It wouldn't quite be warm enough if I wasn't working, but hey  I haven't removed the waterproof leggings from my wellies (no point in tempting fate  ;)) but I am decidedly hot in them  ;D

All this talk of Sunday lunches is making me feel quite hungry. Think I'll be having a bowl of cornflakes and an omelette as usual  :D My own fault, I have half a lamb, half a kid and about 10 cockerels in the freezer but I never remember to get anything out and defrost it in time for a meal at the weekend ::) no time in the week.

Like J, revelling in having some  :sunshine: here today  ;D  No hat!  No gloves!  No coat!  Just pop shoes on and out you go!  Hurrah!   :excited:

First tup out, so first lambs to be expected from 3rd March next year.  Heaven knows what to expect weather-wise...  ::)

Preparing my fermented suint vat for cleansing my fleeces before storage.  Been waiting all summer (well, since clipping, anyway), to get a few dry warm days to get this started.  As it is, it'll be freezing nighttimes so I've cleared a space in the byre for the vat, and will pack it around with straw and maybe discarded wool to insulate it.   :fc: it'll still work - everyone recommends trying to keep it at 'room temperature' but I ain't having that indoors!   :o

Arranged to pick up a new-to-me Ashford Traditional spinning wheel next week.  This is newer than the one I've been using and I hope will be my own keeper.  It's similar vintage to my much-loved Traveller, so they should make a good pair, although the Travvy is stained dark and the Traddy is light.  The Traddy I had been using is the one I was giving everyone a go on at the Festival, and I liked having a wheel I was prepared to let all and sundry have a play on so much I decided I would snap up this other one (a better one) for my own, and keep a less good one as a beginners' wheel.

Today was Madeley Green Day so OH and I went for a look.  It gets bigger every year so plenty to see.  There were the inevitable hog roast (OH forced one down) and burger stall, stalls about recycling, wood turners, owls, meerkats, local walks and green areas, lots of crafts for children to do, various stalls with apples - longest peel, make your own apple juice, etc. - and a climbing wall (no, I didn't.  Can't even watch).  For once, the sun was shining and everybody seemed to be having fun.

Mary, hope you and your OH have a better night tonight.

Our kids are off for the October week here in the Borders, can't afford a holiday so doing 'cultural' things and a bit of visiting.  Taking care of the ducklings first though - 2 hatches about 4 weeks old now - noticed another duck sitting on about a dozen underneath the kiddies playpark slide yesterday, don't know how long she's been there - its very frosty here in the mornings just now, taking to about lunch time to burn off, so keeping an eye on her, better check the heat lamp's working  ;)

At my daughters school, sleepover parties are the done thing.  :o   ::)   Not expensive or difficult to organize and in general they all get on really well but cor do they tire me out. Only 7 girls in her year, including her but you should see them squeezed into some of the teeny cottages round here. They've been known to sleep in the bath. ::)

We all send spare clothes and gogs because they always end up muddy or soaked. No-one seems bothered about a bit of mud here, thank goodness :relief:

It was over bonfire night weekend so we went and watched fireworks from top of our hill (except one girl was scared of fireworks even though they were 10 miles away) pizza for tea (same girl "I don't like pizza") did I scream?! nearly.  I never sleep properly when they have friends on a sleepover so I'm always grouchy next morning  ;)

There is always one girl isn't there Plums?  You try your best and then worry she'll go home and tell mum/dad she had a 'horrid' time!  Oh I remember my daughters' sleepovers very well.  Never got a wink of sleep.  Giggles and squeals all night, hairbrushes stuck in long hair (doing each others hair), two exciteable golden retrievers snaffling all the goodies, mobile phones ringing as they phoned each other in the same room (!), husband getting p'd off with me 'cos I can't keep them quiet and he wants to sleep, etc etc. And then its all over, they are grown up and I'm looking back knowing they had a darn good time.  Job done.  Roll on grandchildren, although I don't quite feel old enough yet  ;) .

He has cooked dinner though - well I put a casserole in the slow cooker this morning but he's done the veg and is just dishing up.

He refuses to do the goats but he does walk the dogs and they don't get much in the way of walks these days.  He is also very houseproud and says he'll help round the house so I won't recognise the place soon.  He came down a couple of weeks ago just to help and my bathroom looked wonderful after he'd gone.

I've been off air for several days  my puter failed because I've been running back up and putting the results onto my hard drive . it apparently filled it to the point of the crash  .
I've lost all sorts as it has been rebooted with the original backup DVD's  the last few days have ben spent  trying to get vista updates pack 1 & 2 onto the machine and sort out email ..who on earth remembers the BT password from nine years ago ?
I'm now slowly working my way through a dozen or so CD/DVDs with my  prgrammes on them.
I've had to upgrade internet explorer and have done a few hair pulling exercises because  quite a lot of things have change and are strange to work with. I've also lost thousands of picture files  of which some of the pictures went bqack to the 1890's
:relief:  Still it could be worse though I'm trying to understand how  ;D

even if you formatted the hard drive the pictures can be recovered, maybe not all of them but certainly some.

look for picassa as a free down load and then tell it to search for all available images, its usually very effective.

stop loading anything else till this is done, the less you put on the more you can save!!!

Having a break from pointing up some brickwork around the new windows I put in a few months ago! Ooops It was too hot back then and now the wind is blowing cold air up my jumper, trouser legs and down my collar and out thru my sleeves. And to think I should have done this job in the sun just wearing my cut down jean shorts and a bandana  ;D - not a pretty sight.

I am working in the cellar - out of the rain and wind and warmer in there than outside. Our water meter is in the cellar and it exploded in the "big freeze" we had. So I'm boarding up and insulating the ceiling window/vents to stop cold air falling in from ground level then making a box with insulation around the water meter and the odd array of water pipes in there. The pipes then go underground to the house so may be a few more inched of soil above them will stop them freezing this year.
OR - I could sit here in front of the fire  :innocent:

Cleaned out the pony, the nesting boxes (too muddy to push the wheelbarrow and do the whole of the hen houses) the ducks , the ducklings and the goats all with the " help" of 2 pygmy goats. I'm sure that it used to take half the time it does now  ::)  Will be sitting down later to some lovely roast pork(thank you Sparticus) :pig:

I have just planted out my onion sets,

That's what I meant to do - but after Friday's big floods we had more rain today... I think anything I'd get into the ground now would just rot away. (I have autumn planting broad beans and peas, too.) So instead I've been sitting indoors, done some baking and a lot of knitting - it's getting colder and I need a warm jumper!

Took on three new portfolios at work (NHS meltdown) - only to discover that they all need complicated business case/service redesign work doing on them :-(

Hey ho - never a dull moment

Reports from DH are that house is going great. All subbies on site today beavering away at the final details. The kitchen is beautiful and I couldn't stop hanging around in there over the weekend :-)

Another mad day for me, up at 5.15am for a couple of hours of cheese making as I'm doing a little cheese making demo this evening for farm members. I've been preparing it all so I can do lots of 'now wait 12 hours and here's one I prepared earlier' and get on to the interesting bits. Then the animal round  till 8.30am and off to the part-time job via the butcher to drop off the cut list for the last two of this year's pigs. Will finish work about four, back for more feeding and milking, quick bite to eat and read some bedtime stories then off for cheese making evening. Should be home by ten, knackered and happy - at least that's the plan!

Hang on, did you say *peeling* a snake? What!?
Title: Re: What's everyone up to today?
Post by: Alistair on October 16, 2012, 03:46:30 pm
Yup, snake peeling,

Not as exotic as it sounds, one of my pythons has managed to shed his head skin and his tail skin and left about 4ft in the middle unshed, so I've put him in the bath, got him out and let him run about his viv for a bit, no more shed coming off, so I'm spraying him with water and peeling bits off every half hour or so cos it makes him grumpy and then he bites me, it's not fun when it's him, all the others, even the big guys are fairly docile it's just this one that's a bit feisty

I have had a brainstorm here,I cleared out my tomatoes last week and was wondering what to put in for winter, then I thought,my pullets could use the outside area to scratch in,so I put two raised beds inside and have put in my onion sets ;D ;D I thought, well at least I am using it for something, the other greenhouse has the same but with shallots.(the girls then can't reap havoc in my beds lol!

Has anyone tried potatoes in the greenhouse or poly over winter?though guess it would have to be pretty frost proof, bubble wrap maybe?

As of today all my pullets are in lay now,so I should have plenty of eggs for Christmas Yayy :excited:

Spinning group in the Dales today, took a raw fleece from one of our commercial sheep as a give-away.  Everyone loved it, raved about it even, and the lady who runs the group said we could definitely sell fleeces of that quality to spinners. Very pleased.  ;D
