Smokey's just had a wee bath. It wasn't a big bath - he was kind of topped and tailed, so he's white at both ends with a dull brown bit in the middle. He's awful itchy. I had hoped the immunotherapy had worked, and early in the season it looked like it had, but he's awful itchy now. His mane is thin in one place and the top of his tail is rubbed. He's also rubbed his face.

So tonight he had his face, mane and tail washed with insect repellant shampoo, and loads of soothing lotion applied. I don't know whether to put a fly mask on him - I suspect it's too late and sometimes the seams cause more rubbing than they prevent.

The midges were torture this morning - I was getting eaten alive when I was feeding the horses.

After his bath, he got his favourite treat - wholemeal bread and Marmite. He and Johnny love it - they stand for ages after licking their lips. Dan's Dad made lovely bread - and the horses really appreciate it.

Your Midges must be like our mosquito's. They will eat you alive!!! This year we bought a mosquito magnet. It looks like a boat motor and it runs on propane. You have a chemical that you put inside that attracts the mosquito's and when they get inside it dehydrates them. Cool, huh? The neat thing is that it gets rid of the mosquito's for up to one acre. We LOVE it as we can now garden and save our blood at the same time!

Sounds like Smokey and Johnny are in heaven with the bread and jam!! YUM YUM!!

Ooh, Wanda. Don't you get Marmite in the States? It's not jam - it's a yeast extract savoury spread. I think that's a decent description. It's dark brown, sticky and salty (no jokes please). Actually, it's supposed to be good for horses (and people) because it's high in B vitamins. You either love it or hate it. I love it for a maximum of one slice of toast a week then I hate it until the next week.

But the boys love it - well, Bruno doesn't really know what to make of it and pulls the most remarkable horse faces when he tastes it. Smokey had it all over his muzzle tonight, so wandered off up the field licking it off.

If you're curious , I'll send you some!
