Introduction to growing tomatoes

Like peas, carrots and strawberries, the difference between home-grown tomatoes and supermarket tomatoes is immeasurable. We grow loads every season, and over the years have honed our technique to the point where we're pretty much guaranteed a good crop. We don't purport to be experts - we do still sometimes see greenhouses flush with green growth and bright red fruit that puts our little house to shame - but the method here is based on a lot of experience trying lots of different things!

Tomatoes

This series of articles will take you through selecting the right varieties for your needs and circumstance (there are hundreds to choose from), through to sowing seed and raising seedlings, to caring for your plants, harvesting and finally ideas for recipes if you have a bumper crop and the novelty of eating little bombs of tomatoey sweetness wears thin.

We're writing these articles during the season, so the full series won't be completed until about August 2008. If you have any feedback please contact us. We're always learning and would love to improve our knowledge and the information on the TAS site.
